Set in Sydney the story centres on the two teenage children of a middle class family. Anna who has just commenced university takes up the cause of an East Timorese refugee Rosa. The story follows the tensions created in the family by the presence of Rosa who is remaining in Australia illegally. The novel highlights the dilemmas posed for us by the presence of refugees as well as the suffering endured by the refugees.
It is an engaging story suitable for senior primary to middle secondary

This is a memoir of life in East Timor and Portugal centred on the author,his family and acquaintances.It charts the emergence from Portugese colonialism, internal political rivalries in East Timor and the growth of a group of new young leaders e.g.Hose Ramos Horta.The writing is subtle and colourful. It is probably accessible only for senior students.

Food.
Cooking stories . This book was produced in association with an exhibition at the Immigration Museum in 2004.The exhibition explored the significance of food in the culture and life of 19 refugees, 8 of them East Timorese.The stories include important meals,special foods, cooking rituals,traditional recipes and associated events that can form part of the refugee experience. Each recipe has a storyteller

Songs of East Timor and Oceania. Dickson, ACT: Canberra Union Voices, 2005.
This songbook with a music CD includes songs of the East Timorese struggle for self determination since 1973 (including the national anthem). The East Timorese community and others gave advice and assistance. The book has music scores for four part choir, words, translation and background information for eighteen songs of significance and beauty from Oceania also including Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander songs, and songs from the Pacific. $29
There is also a copy of this CD at the AEU library.

I have also placed in the A.E.U. library in folders a number of more detailed studies done by United Nations agencies and universities.They may be useful for teachers working at senior levels.
